The 2017 Round Table on current issues of international humanitarian law (IHL), jointly organized by the International Institute of Humanitarian Law and the International Committee of the Red Cross, will take place in Sanremo from 7 to 9 September 2017. The annual Round Table represents an important moment in which constructive debate guides the participants towards finding solutions to the main international humanitarian law issues of the year.
This year’s Round Table will mark the 40th anniversary of the 1977 Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions and will focus on the topic of the protection of civilians and gender violence during both armed conflict and internal violence. Discussions will be specially directed towards the situations in which civilians are exposed to direct attacks and other acts of violence in both NIACs and situations below the threshold of armed conflict.
The issue of gender, which is an increasingly important subject, will also be a central theme and will be discussed with the aim of clarifying the role of gender in the context of IHL by addressing specific aspects such as gender-based violence, gender and weapons and gender and arms control.
