Nuclear Weapons and Human Security

The International Institute of Humanitarian Law, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, organised a one-day conference on the topic "Nuclear Weapons and Human Security".

The conference, held in Sanremo on 18 June 2015, focused on two of the key aspects concerning the interaction between nuclear weapons and human security: the impact of nuclear weapons under international humanitarian law, human rights and international criminal law, and the contribution to human security of nuclear weapons non-proliferation law.

Contributions by internationally renowned experts explored specific issues such as the role of international criminal law in assessing a possible use of nuclear weapons; the U.S. commitments to international law and security; the disputes on nuclear proliferation and the role of the IAEA and other international organisations.
