The International Migration Law and Legal Affairs Department (IML) of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in cooperation with the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL) will conduct the
4th International Migration Law Course (English) 29 September - 3 October 2008, Sanremo
                   

The five-day Course on International Migration Law (IML) is designed for government officials, academia, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations, as well as members of the civil society. It will focus on the international legal framework governing migration, including the rights and responsibilities of States and migrants. The key objective of this Course is to raise the awareness of government officials and those working in the migration context of the importance of international legal instruments in the management of migration.

 

1.jpgThe Course will be conducted in English and open to a maximum of 50 participants. Topics to be covered during the Course include:

-          Overview of International Migration Law and its Main Instruments

-          Migration Terminology

-         Authority and Responsibility of States: Nationality, Admission, Stay, Detention, Expulsion

-          Smuggling and Trafficking

-          Labour Migration

-          Migration and Security

-          Forced Migration

-          Developments in International Cooperation and

-          Regional Legal Frameworks Governing Migration.

 

Immagine 078.jpgThe Course will include lectures, case studies, and practical exercises led by experts in international migration law. Lectures will highlight key legal issues in migration management at the international and national levels. The participants will discuss migration law issues and explore legal solutions to current migration challenges. Case studies will provide participants with the opportunity to use their acquired knowledge and enable them to suggest responses to real life situations in accordance with IML.

 

During the Course, IOM will provide a comprehensive overview and analysis of the instruments related to rights and obligations of migrants and States.

 


The Course will enable government officials to apply in their daily work the international instruments their countries have ratified as well as relevant principles deriving from customary law. Staff from international and non-governmental organizations and civil society groups will be able to use the acquired knowledge in their work, particularly where the rights of migrants are concerned. Persons working for the media will be provided with useful background knowledge for their research and reporting activities. The Course also aims to facilitate the development of partnerships between governments and civil society. A certificate of attendance will be issued upon successful completion of the Course.

Application

Persons wishing to apply for participation in this Course are asked to complete the Application form attached to this flyer. The Application forms must be submitted in English to the International Organization for Migration, IML Department no later than 15 July 2008. Successful applicants will be notified. Please note that only those individuals who applied for the Course and received personal invitation letter from IOM may attend the Course.

The fee can be also paid in cash in Euro or US Dollars during your stay in Sanremo (credit cards are not accepted).

 

Immagine 137.jpgThe participation fee covers accommodation (6 nights - hotel***), lunches, dinners and coffee breaks during working days, working documents and transportation from and to Nice airport. In the event of cancellation, 75 per cent of the participation / enrolment fee will be reimbursed. For participants from developing countries financial support to attend the Course may be granted (please indicate in the Application form).

Language
The Course will be conducted in English. It is essential that participants have a good command of English in order to be able to consult working documents and to follow the lectures, practical exercises and debates
