The purpose of the International Military Course on the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) is to help governments to come to terms with their obligation of ensuring respect for LOAC within their armed forces.
The general aim of the course is to enable and encourage participants to act within their sphere of responsibility in accordance with the principles and rules of LOAC. At the end of the course participants have a basic knowledge of the principles and rules of LOAC and they are able to reach practical military solutions accordingly. The necessity of LOAC training and its integration into military education programmes is also discussed.
The following topics, with emphasis on LOAC, are covered: general introduction to LOAC, state and command responsibility in various strategic situations, means of warfare, rules of engagement, operations planning, behaviour in action, occupied territories, non-international armed conflicts, peace support operations, neutrality, the role of the ICRC, repression of crimes, and law of war training.

The course is meant for military officers, military lawyers and other categories of personnel who work in the armed forces or in related fields and have a direct professional interest in or obligation concerning the application of the law of armed conflict, e.g. military police, military doctors and religious personnel, personnel from law enforcement organisations, persons representing ICRC, National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and other international organisations. The course programme is continuously updated to meet current needs. This two-week course is held six times a year and is conducted in five languages: English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Russian.
