Competition on IHL for Military Academies

7th edition (English) 31 March - 4 April 2008, Sanremo

Immagine 011.jpgThe Competition on the Law of Armed Conflict for Military Academies is addressed specifically to Officer Cadets to offer them an enhanced training in LOAC and the opportunity to promote the respect of the rule of law. As armed conflicts become more complicated this domain is becoming increasingly vital to the profession of military officers and armed forces in general. Military Academies from all over the  world are invited to send a team of senior cadets to this international and unique event.  Each team is  composed of three Officer cadets and one instructor. Lecturers and experts of LOAC from various Academies, Colleges and Universities are also invited to participate actively in order to bring more expertise to this world-wide Competition.

The Competition, which has rapidly become a great success, is divided in two main parts. During the first two days, lectures are presented by various experts on LOAC. Cadets are at all times encouraged to ask questions, provide comments and participate in debates. They are continuosly evaluated both individually and as a group (mixed group) by a panel of judges. During the second phase, the Cadets participate in a Joint Operations Centre, simulating a UN multilateral operation, where countries participate in various types of fictive military operations.

The Competition favours free, open and respectful exchanges between cadets and instructors, and strives to promote the development of friendships and co-operation amongst the participants. Individual and team prizes are awarded to the best in each category.
