5th Course on International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Peace Operations (English) 26 - 30 May 2008, Sanremo
The challenge and responsability to promote, respect and protect human rights and dignity of local populations can be considered one of the most important features of modern day peace operations.This is particularly evident in operations were force is bestowed with executive functions as in both Kosovo and East Timor. Military and police forces have a key role to play in the advancement of human rights in their host country.An essential condition for effective human rights protection and promotion in any international peace operation is the integration of human rights standards within the international presence itself. The need of enhance preparedness of military and police personnel in this field has thus become necessary and should become an integral part of the training and preparations by United Nations or national forces participating in peace operations.
The Course has the following goals:
- To examine the core principles and rules of International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and their application and implementation in Peace Opeartions.- To explore the role of police and military forces regarding the protection and promotion of international human rights and humanitarian law in Peace Operations.- To describe the role of the UN, regional organisations and the ICRC in the protection and promotion of international human rights and humanitarian law in peace Operations.
The Course is primarily designed for military and police forces occupying staff or operational positions and who may be called upon to serve in peace operations. The participation of other government officials or other categories of persons with a marked interest for the subjects covered is however welcomed. Participants do not require legal training or any legal experience prior to attending this course. The Course is one week in length and the working language is English.
Course fee: 700 €Inclusive of tuition, teaching material, lunch and refreshments on all working days, receptions, transportation from/to Nice airport and Sanremo, diploma, group photo and IIHL plaque.
